David Giesel and his quartet present contemporary jazz full of energy, openness, and lively dynamics. The four musicians from Germany, England, and Sweden bring their individual voices to a sound that is deeply rooted in jazz but also incorporates elements of rock and indie aesthetics. Their debut album Echoes of the Unknown reflects this mixture of structure and openness – music that thrives on groove, subtle timbres, and presence.
At the center is David Giesel – not only as a drummer, but also as a composer. His music is particularly compelling thanks to its catchy, concise melodies that define the band's sonic framework. The compositions combine modern harmonies with clear grooves and straightforward formal ideas without constricting the music. Instead of over-complexity, Giesel deliberately focuses on reduction and transparency – on spaces where interaction, spontaneity, and trust are crucial. The music thrives on the dialogue between the musicians and the courage to let go of control.

Die Sessions finden jeden Donnerstag im Schall und Rauch statt.
Um 20:30 Uhr spielt eine Opening Band, anschliessend beginnt die Jam Session für die Basler Jazz Szene.

Der Abend beginnt mit einer Opener-Band, die das Publikum mit jazzigen Klängen
begeistert. Anschließend laden offene Live-Jazz-Jamsessions Profis und Amateure
ein, gemeinsam zu improvisieren und die Bühne zu teilen. Dank der Verbindung zum
Jazzcampus Basel ziehen wir ein junges, kreatives Publikum an, vor allem Studieren-
de, die hier experimentieren und sich austauschen können. Ziel ist es, eine lebendi-
ge Jazz-Community zu fördern, die sowohl Jazzliebhaber*innen als auch Neugierige
anspricht. Durchgehend hochwertiger Live-Jazz bis Mitternacht macht den Abend
zu einem Fest für die Sinne und einem Ort des musikalischen Dialogs. Wir wollen die
Jazzkultur in Basel stärken, den Austausch zwischen Musiker*innen und Publikum
fördern und eine offene, gemeinschaftliche Musikkultur schaffen.
